N-Methylaniline
Versatile Secondary Amine Intermediate for Industrial Synthesis
N-Methylaniline, systematically named N -methylbenzenamine, is a pale yellow to brownish oily liquid with a faint amine-like odor. It is slightly soluble in water (1.1 g/L at 20°C) but fully miscible with ethanol, ether, benzene, and most organic solvents. With a boiling point of 194-196°C and a flash point of 78°C (closed cup), N-Methylaniline exhibits moderate volatility and flammability. Its vapor forms explosive mixtures with air at concentrations of 1.2% to 7.4% (volume fraction). This secondary amine combines aromatic reactivity with alkylamine functionality, enabling diverse chemical transformations.
Key Industrial Applications
1. Dye & Pigment Production :
- Intermediate for synthesizing azo dyes (e.g., solvent yellows) and sulfur dyes.
- Precursor for triphenylmethane and anthraquinone derivatives.
2. Rubber Industry :
- Accelerator precursor for vulcanization agents (e.g., CBS, TBBS).
- Antioxidant additive in synthetic rubber formulations.
3. Pharmaceuticals :
- Building block for antihypertensive and antipsychotic drug synthesis.
- Intermediate in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs).
4. Agrochemicals :
- Key raw material for herbicides (e.g., phenylurea derivatives) and fungicides.
- Stabilizer in pesticide emulsifiable concentrates.
5. Polymer Additives :
- Antioxidant and antiozonant in plastics and elastomers.
- Chain-transfer agent in radical polymerization processes.
